Abstract
A quantitative study conducted in 2007 on unionized journalists who work for the larger media in Quebec revealed that 82% of them estimate that media convergence does not have a positive effect on journalism, while about 70% believe that it threatens the public’s right to quality information. In the course of qualitative research done in 2009 on the members of the two main journalism associations, we tallied the reasons for such negative reactions. Our analysis reveals that the journalists raise concerns mainly about the loss of diversity of information, the disappearance of jobs, an increase in workloads and a decline in freedom. Rare are those journalists who defend the convergence strategies of news enterprises.
