Abstract
Le jongo est une danse afrobrésilienne développée par les anciens esclaves dans les grandes exploitations agricoles du Brésil où se cultivait le café au XIX e siècle. Au cours du XX e siècle, l’urbanisation et la migration vers les grandes villes brésiliennes l’ont pratiquement fait disparaître. Il n’existait plus que dans de petites villes pauvres ayant connu une dégradation économique après l’abolition de l’esclavage et le déclin de la culture du café. Aujourd’hui, la population afrobrésilienne de ces localités utilise le jongo pour construire une identité et une mémoire dans le contexte des politiques d’affirmation culturelle. Cette pratique attire l’intérêt et l’appui des étudiants et des chercheurs en ce qu’elle légitime les identités (noire et brésilienne) de cette population et ses « lectures » de l’histoire et de l’esclavage, tout en facilitant son accès à des fonds privés et gouvernementaux. Le jongo constitue une illustration de la nouvelle performativité afrobrésilienne dans le contexte de la transnationalisation du mouvement noir et de ses revendications anciennes et nouvelles.
