Abstract

-- ABSTRACT: Modern paleontology demonstrates a special interest in ontogenetic series of fossil \nspecies because they allow the documentation of the evolution of development in a \ntemporal context. However, the first periods of development (embryonic, larval, juvenile) \nare rarely known in fossil species. In this study, the ontogeny of the lungfish Scaumenacia \ncurta of the Upper Devonian of Miguasha (Québec, Canada) has been documented using a \nsize series including 151 specimens taken from a fish assemblage that could be interpreted \nas a fossilized nursery. The objectives of this study are: (1) to document the growth of S. \ncurta in terms of size and shape, (2) to establish the ossification patterns of postcranial \nelements and (3) to discuss the different evolutionary hypotheses leading to the \nmorphology observed in ex tant lungfish species with the help of developmental modules. \nGrowth in terms of size and shape of S. curta is characterized by the presence of \nallometry at the level of (1) the distance between the posterior margin of the operculum and \nthe point of insertion of the first dorsal fin, (2) the length of the insertion of the first dorsal \nfin, (3) the interdorsal distance and (4) the distance between the insertion of the anal fin and \nthe ventral insertion of the caudal fin . The ossification follows specifie patterns: (1) anteroposterior \nfor the supraneurals, the ribs, the hem al spines, the ventral radiaIs and the distal \nradiaIs of the anal fin, (2) postero-anterior for the anterior neural spines and proximal \nradiaIs of the anal fin, (3) bidirectional for the posterior neural spines and dorsal radiaI s and \n(4) proximo-distal for the supporting elements of the second dorsal fin and the anal fin. The \nossification of the postcranial skeleton follows a saltatory model of development. The \npresence of developmental modules is not supported in spite of strong morphological \nintegration for certain characters. The presence of three larval specimens supports \npaedomorphosis of extant lungfish and the loss of metamorphosis during the Devonian. \nScaumenacia curta becomes the only fossil lungfish whose ontogeny is known for the \nlarval, juvenile and adult periods.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
