Abstract Microarray comparative genome hybridization (maCGH) is a highly parallel assay for detecting DNA copy number changes. The method has been used to detect copy number alterations associated with cancer, congenital anomalies, and developmental disorders. CGH extends the diagnostic power of G‐banding and FISH imaging, but is limited to the detection of only those aberrations that are accompanied by changes in the copy number of genomic segments. Over the past decade, different CGH formats have been explored (chromosome spreads, clone microarrays, and oligonucleotide microarrays) in efforts to increase both resolution and sensitivity, and thereby improve the utility of the approach for both research and clinical applications.
