Abstract
En août 1961, lorsque le North Pioneer jette l’ancre au large d’Unamen Shipu (La Romaine), soixante-cinq Innus de Pakuashipi (Saint-Augustin) débarquent avec leurs biens pour s’installer dans leur nouvelle communauté, reconnue comme réserve depuis 1954 et dotée d’un missionnaire permanent depuis 1953. Au printemps 1963, quelques-uns de ces « expatriés » décident de faire le trajet inverse et de regagner leur territoire d’origine. Le trajet de retour – qui durera un mois – se fera à pied sur une distance d’environ deux cent cinquante kilomètres, avec femmes, enfants, chiens, canots et traîneaux. D’autres membres du groupe feront le même trajet de retour quelques mois plus tard, en avion et en bateau. D’autres encore ne repartiront jamais d’Unamen Shipu, où ils vivent toujours aujourd’hui. Cette note de recherche a pour objet de documenter ce projet avorté de relocalisation et d’interroger les perceptions des Innus à son égard. Les Innus parlent, en effet, de « déportation » : Ka atanakaniht.
