A Selective Bibliography of Writings about Tudor Music 1992-2007: For John Harley on His Eightieth Birthday

John Harley was born at Plumstead, London, England, on 30 April 1928. He was educated at Eltham College and, after national service in the Royal Air Force, began his career in librarianship as an assistant at the Guildhall Library, London, in 1949. In 1952 he went to Cambridge to start the Institute of Education Library, and in 1954 went abroad to Canada and became bookmobile librarian in York Township, Ontario. The following year he moved to the U.S.A. as director of the newly founded Paramus Free Public Library in New Jersey, becoming a Fellow of the Library Association (UK) in 1957 and winning the Library Association Essay Prize in 1958. In 1961 he went to Hong Kong as Librarian of the newly founded City Hall Library, returning to England as a mature student at Wadham College, Oxford from 1964 to 1966. He won the Wadham College Essay Prize in 1966, and in the same year was awarded his B.A. (subsequently M.A. 1970). He worked temporarily in the library of the Ashmolean Museum until 1967, when he left the profession to join the civil ser vice. John has written innumerable books, articles and reviews about music, specializing in early music, which he has also edited. Beginning with a penchant for Purcell and Jeremiah Clarke, he has latterly become well known and respected for his work on earlier composers such as Philips, Gibbons and, most notably, Byrd. His discovery that was born three years earlier than previously thought has necessitated the revision of all relevant biographical and musical literature. Only last year he published a substantial article, jointly with Andrew Ashbee, in Fontes artis musicae of the updates, revisions and corrections for their book A biographical dictionary of English court musicians, 1485-1714. In 1992 my book Tudor Music: A Research and Information Guide, with an Appendix Updating William Byrd: A Guide to Research was published in New York by Garland as volume 18 of their Music Research and Information Guides series. Subsequently it won the C.B. Oldman Prize for that year. In essence a selective annotated bibliography of books and articles, its main section includes items about Tudor music excluding material about Byrd, published up to the end of 1991, plus an appendix containing material about published 1987-1991 inclusive, updating my book William Byrd: A Guide to Research which was published as volume 7 of Garland Composer Resource Manuals in 1987, under the same imprint. In 2006 the material about appended to Tudor Music was incorporated into the entirely new second edition of William Byrd: A Guide to Research which is listed below as number 251. The present bibliography is also selective. In order to include as much worthwhile material as possible while limited by the constraints of being an article rather than a book, it is not annotated. Nor does it include articles from the period in question that are devoted to Byrd. The most recent of these can be found listed in Byrd on a wire, number 250 below. This is an annual series, each article of which includes a detailed commentary on all the preceding year's publications about Byrd. This and 251, already mentioned, provide a comprehensive guide to all writings about within the period in question. Nevertheless among the items listed in the present article there are a few that feature Byrd, but always in conjunction with other Tudor composers. …
