Les Tetes a Papineau de Jacques Godbout, publie en 1981 au Quebec, est considere comme un roman allegorique ayant une dimension politicosociale. Dans ce roman, le protagoniste bicephale, Charles-Francois Papineau, sert de metaphore pour figurer la double identite, les deux tetes incarnant les deux cotes de la psyche quebecoise, a savoir, ‘americain’ et francais. Si la monstruosite du bicephale a ete remarquee souvent par les critiques, les autres ‘monstres’ qui peuplent le monde romanesque des Tetes ne semblent pas attirer suffisamment d’attention qu’ils meritent bien que ‘ces monstres secondaires’ jouent un role important dans la structure signifiante du roman. Les Fontaines et les monstres du ‘Racine Greater Show’ aident Charles-Francois a accepter leur identite double en les faisant envisager le monde d’un point de vue different, a savoir, celui des monstres. De cette facon, ils relativisent la distinction normal/anormal, et ainsi, sur le plan symbolique, rendent caduque la pretention a la normalite des colonisateurs. Pourtant, cette affirmation de la monstruosite est d’avance vouee a l’echec, en ce sens qu’elle se fait au detriment du present. Replies sur eux-meme et sur le passe, ces monstres refusent d’affronter le monde actuel. A la fin, Dr. Northridge transforme Charles-Francois en un unicephale unilingue en les amalgamant par une operation chirurgicale, et ainsi, faisant d’eux un etre comme lui, sans passe et sans tradition. De cette facon, il met la fin, symboliquement, bien sur, a la dualite quebecoise. En finissant son roman par la lettre de Charles F. Papineau ecrite entierement en anglais, Godbout semble demander aux lecteurs : est-ce l’avenir que vous prevoyez pour les Quebecois? Et cette question invite les lecteurs a chercher une troisieme voie.
