Cet ouvrage est le fruit d'un dialogue entre des historiens professionnels et un comit d'anciens de l'tablissement, charg d' orienter les auteurs vers des domaines intressant les personnes sourdes (p. 16). Le livre est organis selon un plan chronologique : Stphane-D. Perreault, spcialiste reconnu de l'histoire sourde, signe quatre chapitres couvrant les annes 1840 1960, tandis que l'historienne Sylvie Pelletier, associe au projet sur le tard, a rdig deux chapitres qui courent de 1960 aujourd'hui.
