Zur Erforschung mechanischer Frostschaden in den Rebanlagen der Niagara-Halbinsel in der Provinz Ontario, Kanada, wurden wahrend der Winterhalbjahre 1974 bis 1977 Daten uber den Temperaturverlauf, das tangentiale Dehnungsverhalten und den Wassergehalt von Rebstokken gesammelt. Diese Daten bildeten die Grundlage fur Gefrierversuche mit frisch geschnittenen Stammproben von 3 bis 4 Jahre alten Vinifera-Rebstocken in einer temperaturprogrammierten Kammer. Warmeverhalten und Eisbildung im Rebstockgewebe wurden ferner mit Hilfe eines theoretischen Simulationsmodells analysiert. Simulationsdaten und Mesergebnisse zeigten sehr gute Ubereinstimmung und wiesen auf die enorme Bedeutung des Wasserhaushaltes fur den Umfang der Eisbildung und die damit in direktem Zusammenhang stehenden mechanischen Schaden hin. Sie unterstrichen die starke Rolle von abgeschlossener Holzreife und Auswahl trockener Standorte ohne frostbedingte Staunasse fur den erfolgreichen Anbau von Vinifera-Sorten im Kontinentalklima.
