Abstract
Tant que l'essentiel des conduites des agents a pu être analysé en référence à des qualités portées par les sujets, mais définies en dehors d'eux, la question de ce qui fait lien entre des êtres humains a pu se résoudre à travers l'étude des mécanismes objectifs et dépersonnalisés du fonctionnement social et de la reproduction sociale. Dans les sociétés de modernité avancée, la généralisation du processus d'individualisation oblige la sociologie à se confronter beaucoup plus directement et spécifiquement à la question du lien. Alors que la sociologie s'était jusqu'ici élaborée comme science de l'individu sous contrainte, l'évolution sociohistorique récente l'amène à se définir un nouvel objet qu'on peut appeler la relation sans contrainte. On y décèle un éveil des sociologues à une question qu'ils ont longtemps eu tendance à laisser aux philosophes, celle de la liberté.
