€ 1Le genre biographique est resté longtemps un genre mineur dans l'historiographie, quand il ne fut pas considéré avec dédain par les historiens eux-mêmes.Depuis plusieurs années et dans des registres divers, des auteurs ont contredit, qui avec bonheur, qui avec éclat, cette image négative.2 C'est une très solide biographie de facture classique, fondée sur un ample éventail d'archives, que nous livre Francis Quiers à propos du conventionnel et général Milhaud.L'auteur est son lointain descendant, ce qui ne l'empêche pas de tendre constamment à l'objectivité et de faire œuvre d'historien sans hagiographie.À vrai dire, il s'agissait plutôt pour F. Quiers de démythifier la légende noire d'un « second couteau » -pour reprendre ses termes -de la période révolutionnaire et impériale, resté inconnu voire méconnu à tous les sens du terme dans son département natal, le Cantal ; l'auteur explique au cours de son ouvrage les raisons de cet ostracisme persistant.Ce faisant, le biographe a le grand mérite de ne pas se contenter de raconter la « geste » de Jean-Baptiste Milhaud dont la vie fut pourtant fort remplie, ni de lui rendre simplement justice mais aussi, en replaçant le personnage dans une perspective historique, de se livrer à une réflexion sur cette époque et sur la portée psychologique et sociologique nouvelle qu'elle donna à la destinée de bien des hommes, même de ceux qui restèrent au second plan.
