Abstract
Poser les jalons d’une histoire de la lecture représente un complément à la connaissance de l’histoire du livre. Parmi les sources accessibles au chercheur, les textes de la littérature personnelle offrent une image plus vivante des lecteurs que d’autres sources purement statistiques. La littérature personnelle laisse plus précisément apparaître divers types de lecture. Les écrits intimes d’Hector de Saint-Denys Garneau et de Fernand Ouellette révèlent la vivacité de l’engagement individuel que la lecture suscite chez eux. Nous avons nommé lecture engagée cette forme de lecture aussi exigeante pour le lecteur qu’elle est inflexible envers le texte. Elle doit en effet répondre aux mêmes exigences de vérité, de pureté et d’absolu auxquelles ces lecteurs tentent de se conformer dans la conduite de leur vie.
