Abstract
On se souviendra que le Théâtre Populaire du Québec, créé en 1963 sous l'impulsion de Jean Valcourt, a tout d'abord été conçu comme un « véritable théâtre de répertoire 1 » ; objet étatique plus idéaliste que civique, la jeune compagnie, dans un dessein éducatif et culturaliste, mettait alors en scène des œuvres présentant une « valeur de révélation et d'élévation » aux publics estudiantins du Québec, mais aussi des provinces et États limitrophes.Le 16 janvier 1969, c'est-à-dire le lendemain de la mort subite du premier directeur artistique du TPQ, son conseil d'administration (Guy Beaulne, André Duranleau, René Dussault, Jean Filiatrault, Jean-Joffre Gourd, Jean Pelletier et Claude Pichette) se réunit, après avoir convenu d'offrir cinq grand-messes « pour le repos de son âme », afin de discuter de « son remplacement comme metteur en scène 2 ».Les noms retenus sont Paul Blouin, André Brassard, François Cartier, Jean-Paul Fugère, Georges Groulx et Jean Guy.Or, deux mois plus tard, évoquant Albert Millaire, Jacques Létourneau et Paul Hébert, on décide d'engager « un véritable directeur artistique, 1.
