Une analyse des savoirs produits sur le vodou haïtien met en évidence le peu de matériel empirique disponible sur cet objet magico-religieux. Ce manque de matériel explique en partie les limites des savoirs sur le vodou et remet en question un certain nombre de conclusions couramment admises dans la littérature socio-anthropologique. Pour éclairer cette lacune, l’auteur propose d’aborder les exigences et les modalités du terrain anthropologique en Haïti à partir d’une collecte de données effectuée dans les campagnes haïtiennes et destinée à une analyse microsociale des savoirs et des pratiques vodou. Dans ce texte, il partage son expérience en soulignant les particularités du terrain sur le vodou, les difficultés qu’on peut y rencontrer et des stratégies qu’on peut éventuellement adopter pour une meilleure connaissance du vodou. Il suggère que la complexité d’un terrain anthropologique sur le vodou peut expliquer en partie le manque de matériel empirique disponible sur cet objet.
