Les basses terres de la baie James forment un bassin sédimentaire majeur ayant enregistré les avancées et retraits de la marge glaciaire de l'inlandsis laurentidien. Malgré cette importance stratigraphique, il y a une grande lacune au niveau de la compréhension des événements quaternaires de cette région; la dernière étude réalisée remontant à plus de 30 ans. De plus, à l'est de la baie James, dans le territoire nordique du Québec, de récents modèles de chronologie relative dans l'écoulement des glaces ont démontré une succession complexe de mouvements glaciaires qui ne sont pas présents dans les reconstitutions paléogéographiques antérieures. Le canevas stratigraphique de cette région doit donc être revu sur la base d'études stratigraphiques et de datations absolues. Ce projet de recherche a consisté en l'échantillonnage de sédiments quaternaires affleurant le long de la rivière Harricana dans la portion des basses terres de la baie James. Les sédiments glaciaires ont été étudiés afin de déduire les grands axes d'écoulement glaciaire et les sédiments d'origine nonglaciaire ont été datés par luminescence optique et au radiocarbone. Les datations de ces unités non-glaciaires, qui sont en contact direct avec les unités glaciaires, ont permis d'apporter de nouvelles contraintes chronologiques sur ces avancées qui ont marqué la dernière glaciation.
