Cet essai propose une analyse détaillée de l'impact politique et social des firmes transnationales (FTN) sur trois champs particulièrement sensibles aussi bien dans les pays d'origine que dans les pays d'accueil. L'auteur s'intéresse d'abord à la contradiction entre l'interdépendance économique mondiale croissante et la permanence de la fragmentation politique, et montre que les transnationales peuvent affaiblir les capacités de l'État à réaliser les objectifs d'une politique économique, et donc affaiblir sa capacité à maintenir stabilité politique et consensus social. Dans un deuxième temps, l'auteur focalise l'attention sur l'impact des FTN sur le marché du travail, l'organisation de la production et les relations industrielles. Il montre notamment que le contrôle des FTN sur un marché du travail diversifié combiné à une organisation à l'échelle mondiale de la production permet de maintenir des profits élevés. La dernière section de ce texte analyse les conséquences négatives dans les pays sous-développés de la production et de la mise en marché des produits des FTN : distorsion des modèles de consommation, dénationalisation des élites et des classes moyennes locales, détérioration ou destruction des valeurs autochtones.
