Pour les théories critiques des médias d’inspiration marxiste, la culture des jeux vidéo constitue un terrain fertile. Les entreprises de ce secteur auraient réussi à mobiliser une armée de joueurs-travailleurs et joueuses-travailleuses qui travaillent volontairement sans rémunération, et à commercialiser et contrôler leur activité. Nous souhaitons remettre en cause cette perspective, en considérant les joueurs et les joueuses du jeu vidéo Little Big Planet, et de ses prolongements Little Big Planet 2 et Little Big Planet 3, comme les producteurs et productrices de valeur intrinsèque. Proposant plus de quatre millions de niveaux de jeu créés par des joueurs et des joueuses, Little Big Planet met à profit la connaissance tactique que les joueurs et les joueuses ont des objets matériels, en remplaçant la conception de niveau par un bricolage matériel virtuel. En dépit des gains financiers réalisés par Media Molecule, ces joueurs et ces joueuses deviennent des producteurs et des productrices autonomes. La pratique matérielle de la conception artisanale de niveaux dans Little Big Planet offre des valeurs alternatives et ouvre des possibilités de création qui sont aux antipodes des systèmes de production dominants dans le secteur des jeux vidéo.
