Dans cette revue de la documentation, l'analyse des rapports entre l'école et la famille est abordée sous trois dimensions. Une première réflexion est axée autour des caractéristiques et des attitudes familiales qui assurent la performance scolaire des enfants. La suivante se construit autour de l'épineuse question des perceptions que les enseignants et les parents entretiennent les uns envers les autres. Les aspects négatifs mais aussi positifs de la participation des parents sont dégagés. Trois modèles des rapports des parents à l'école sont ensuite exposés et illustrés à l'aide des données d'une étude québécoise. Enfin, la troisième partie présente des modèles de contribution des parents à l'école et identifie des types d'école d'après la place accordée aux parents dans l'institution scolaire. C'est un modèle d'école communautaire qui répondrait le mieux aux diverses problématiques auxquelles l'école québécoise est confrontée; cependant, l'état actuel des rapports entre l'école et la famille oriente plutôt l'action vers une multitude de projets valorisant toute forme de participation.
