Abstract
Prenant la suite de Paul Delarue décédé au moment de la publication du premier volume de son catalogue raisonné du conte populaire français, Marie-Louise Tenèze rédigea le second volume, clôturant ainsi la section des Contes merveilleux. Avant d’entreprendre celle des Contes d’animaux, elle mena sur le plateau d’Aubrac, au sud du Massif central, une enquête de littérature orale qui constitue le moment charnière de sa recherche. Nous avons voulu ici retracer ce parcours très riche et peu connu qui, plaçant désormais l’origine du conte dans le conteur lui-même, la conduit au-delà de la collecte des récits à dresser à l’écoute de ses interlocuteurs le « profil narratif » de cette région. Permettant l’élaboration de nouveaux concepts, ce déplacement du regard du conte vers les conteurs constitue, selon sa propre expression, « un renversement complet de la perspective » sur les contes de tradition orale, jusque-là abordés à partir de leur écriture et du point de vue de leur contenu.
