Dans ses recherches successives relatives à la dynamique du taux de profit, Marx identifie la croissance de la différence entre les taux de plus-value et de profit comme la condition la plus générale de la baisse du second en dépit de la hausse du taux de plus-value général. Il a cherché avec acharnement à formuler la loi de son évolution. Même s’il n’y est pas parvenu, il a mis partiellement à jour sa dépendance à l’endroit de l’intensité de variation du taux de plus-value. Or dès qu’on traite le taux de profit comme système dynamique discret, la prise en compte de cette intensité s’impose et permet de formuler les conditions les plus générales de l’existence de la baisse et d’une tendance nécessaire à la baisse du taux de profit. Elle nous permet aussi bien de formuler les lois élémentaires qui gouvernent les intensités de variation de la composition, de l’accumulation, de la différence simple entre les deux taux et de leurs relations.
