Abstract
A passage from Prosper Mérimée’s Essai sur la guerre sociale (1841) is used to reveal some characteristics of his historiographical practice: explicit referral to only some of the works he cites, rewriting of the sources, storytelling, a concern for composition, cross-referencing, moral judgments, etc. Some of these characteristics are reminiscent of classical historiography itself and, just as one would do in assessing the latter, one should avoid dissociating, in Mérimée’s work as a historian of Antiquity, his writing techniques from his outlook on the past.
