Abstract
이 연구는 시크 디아스포라의 캐나다로의 이주와 시크 공동체 형성과정에서 드러난 시크 디아스포라의 분화와 결속, 그리고 9.11 사태 이후 북미 사회에서 증오범죄(hate crime)의 주요 희생양이 되게 된 일련의 과정들을 ‘터번’과 ‘터번착용’이란 사회·문화적 프리즘을 통해 살펴보고자 한다. 시크로서 입문식을 거행한 시크는 5Ks라는 외형물을 유지하도록 해야 한다. 5Ks는 케스(Kes : 자르지 않은 머리), 캉가(Kangha: 머리 빗), 카차(Kaccha:순결을 상징하는 하의 속옷), 카라(Kara: 헌신의 상징인 철제 팔지), 키르판(Kirpan:자기 방어, 명예, 불굴의 정신의 상징인 단검)을 말한다. 비록 터번착용은 5Ks에 해당되지 않지만 지금까지 시크의 정체성을 외형적으로 가장 잘 드러내고 있다. 종교적 ‘정통성’과 ‘진정성’이란 담론을 통해 시크 사회가 분화된 과정은 터번을 둘러싼 시크 집단 내의 ‘정체성의 정치’(politics of identity)의 일면을 보여주고 있다. 한편 터번착용의 문제가 캐나다 주류 사회의 맥락에 놓일 때의 터번착용은 시크 사회를 결속시켜 주는 상징적 행위로 작용한다. 이것은 자신들을 단순히 ‘인도-캐나다인’(Indo-Canadians)으로 규정하기 보다는 ‘캐나다 거주 시크’(Canadian Sikhs)라는 종교적 정체성을 토대로 인정해 주길 요구하는 일종의 캐나다 시크들의 ‘인정의 정치’(politics of recognition) 행위로 이해될 수 있다. 1985년 에어 인디아 폭파 사건으로 과격분자라는 ‘혐의’가 늘 드리워져 있던 캐나다 시크들은 터번착용으로 인해 미국의 9.11 이후 잠재적 테러리스트가 되고 있다. 캐나다의 시크들에게 1984년의 ‘시크 홀로코스트’의 트라우마는 아직 끝나지 않았지만, 9.11 사태로 인해 터번을 착용한 시크가 증오범죄의 대상이되고 있다는 현실 때문에 또 다른 집단적 트라우마를 경험하고 있다. 현재 캐나다 시크들은 터번을 착용한 시크를 과격분자로 잘못 인식하고 있는 캐나다인을 상대로 시크 관련 사실을 홍보하고 교육시키는데 노력하고 있다.
