Abstract Louise Jilek‐Aall was born on April 21, 1931 in Oslo, Norway. She studied philosophy at the University of Oslo and pursued medical studies at the University of Tubingen and University of Saarland in Germany and at the University of Zurich in Switzerland, where she defended her dissertation on epilepsy in East Africa under Professor Manfred Bleuler and received the degree of Doctor of Medicine. She holds diplomas in tropical medicine from the Swiss Institute of Tropical Medicine in Basle and in psychiatry from McGill University in Montreal, and a Master of Arts degree in anthropology from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
