Abstract
Abstract Judith Nisse Shklar was born in Riga, Latvia and escaped the Nazi occupation of 1941 by fleeing, with her family, first to Norway and then across the USSR. She attended McGill University in Montreal, obtaining her BA and MA degrees there. She took classes in McGill from the American political theorist Frederick Watkins, who encouraged her to pursue political theory as a career. She was awarded her doctorate from Harvard in 1955, working principally with Carl Joachim Friedrich. Upon matriculation she was offered an instructorship (then the starting position at Harvard) and, except for visiting positions, she spent all of her academic career there. She was always conscious of being an exile and her political theory is to some degree shaped by the recognition of that fact.
