Depuis 1989, les questions soulevées par le port du foulard islamique dans les écoles publiques ont éveillé l’intérêt de nombreux chercheurs en sciences sociales. « L’affaire du foulard », puisque c’est ainsi qu’ils l’ont désignée, en est-elle réellement une ? À partir de cette interrogation, cet article propose de caractériser les principales lignes de réflexion qui se sont détachées de cette production scientifique, pour ensuite revenir sur les impensés et les apories qui caractérisent les propositions d’analyse du port du foulard dans la société française. L’article prend donc appui sur les récits, les objets et les acquis de près de vingt années de recherche, pour pointer, à partir d’un intérêt plus récent pour les aspects juridiques du sujet, la nécessité de refonder une démarche de sociologie capable de prendre au sérieux le religieux dans la pratique des acteurs. Dans cette dernière partie de l’article, ce sont les « absences » de la recherche, le silence sur les souffrances et le défaut de définition qui sont plus spécifiquement examinés afin d’envisager comment « refaire de la sociologie » sur cet objet spécifique, notamment à partir des perspectives de la sociologie juridique.
