Abstract
Cet article résulte de cinquante témoignages d’Algonquins (ou Magouas) de la région de Trois-Rivières portant sur la mémoire familiale et les origines amérindiennes ainsi que la perception de soi et celle de la population majoritaire envers soi. L’enquête a été conduite dans le contexte de la réclamation du statut légal d’Indien, à titre d’Algonquins, de trois cent cinquante personnes. Longtemps ségréguée et victime de préjugés (« Sauvages non-civilisés »), cette population se caractérise par le maintien d’un réseau endogame de mariage et par une parenté de type classificatoire. Les principaux marqueurs de l’identité concernent la mémoire, l’histoire, la généalogie, la mobilité reliée aux activités de prédation, au travail précaire et à la pauvreté, et, finalement, un rapport spécifique à la nature. Les Algonquins sont toujours là.
