L’auteur analyse d’un point de vue narratologique quelques « bandes dessinées » réalisées par Cohl pour la presse. Il montre notamment comment le dessinateur suggère le mouvement et l’action en créant des interactions entre l’avant-plan et l’arrière-plan de l’image. La question de la « transformation » ne s’y avère pas seulement importante pour aborder le récit, mais aussi pour analyser les motifs de la figuration cohlienne : on y décerne principalement une isotopie de la mise à mal de l’unité corporelle. À ce démembrement des individus correspond par ailleurs un jeu sur les unités linguistiques qui sous-tend parfois les représentations iconiques, celles-ci résultant d’une visualisation littérale d’expressions figurées.
