Discusses the powers and procedures created by the Banking Act 2009 for dealing with distressed banks. Outlines the special resolution regime, looking at what constitutes a failing bank and when the procedure can be used. Considers the heightened powers of supervision given to the Financial Services Authority (FSA). Investigates the three stabilisation options available to the Bank of England, along with the FSA and Treasury. Examines the way in which the Dunfermline Building Society was dealt with. Compares the UK regime with that of the US and Canada.
