Abstract
Des de la primera Conferencia Habitat a Vancouver el 1976, les ciutats han emergit com els escenaris socials, economics, culturals i politics de major rellevancia per al progres huma, tant des de les seves possibilitats i oportunitats com des de les seves limitacions i desafiaments. Despres de l'impuls de les distintes conferencies i els seus conseguents acords internacionals, han sigut nombrosos els instituts d'investigacio urbana, economica i agencies internacionals de cooperacio que han promogut i portat a terme estudis sobretot allo que concerneix als assentaments humans i en particular als paisos en vies de desenvolupament (PVD)
