Résumé Cet article examine la façon quasi « obsessionnelle » avec laquelle le personnel du Constance Hospital d’Easterneuk en Écosse, notamment les brancardiers, procède à la classification de leur environnement dans leur milieu hospitalier. Menant son enquête de terrain en travaillant lui-même comme brancardier, l’auteur relate son expérience. Il décrit comment une identité classificatoire apparemment arbitraire est attribuée aux personnes et aux choses, mais aussi le plaisir et même la passion que suscite cette pratique. Il montre qu’en empruntant à l’institution ce que l’on peut considérer comme le discours archétypique de la distinction, la discipline, la hiérarchie et l’administration hospitalières, la « communauté des brancardiers » fait une satire subversive de l’ordre établi. Ce faisant, elle revêt l’apparence d’une république sécessionniste dont chaque membre exercerait un pouvoir existentiel individuel.
