La traduction d’un terme sankrit engage à réfléchir sur les rapports d’une part entre le découpage linguistique et les techniques, d’autre part entre deux techniques différentes. L’article identifie d’abord les techniques évoquées - barattage et production du feu - et les représentations culturelles qui leur sont attachées. Puis il montre qu’elles font partie d’un même ensemble technique, c’est-à-dire qu’elles mettent en œuvre les mêmes connaissances et principes généraux. L’analyse technologique éclaire l’expression linguistique et montre ce que peut apporter le dialogue entre philologie et technologie.
