Abstract
The causes and treatment of dyspareunia are approached from the empirically validated biopsychosocial perspective. Physical conditions most commonly associated with deep and superficial dyspareunia (including provoked vestibulodynia) are reviewed, in addition to psychophysical, sexual, and psychosocial correlates and consequences of persistent painful intercourse. A concurrent multidisciplinary treatment approach is recommended that targets the assessment and treatment of organic pathology while simultaneously addressing muscular retraining, sexual dynamics and dysfunction, psychological distress, and pain management through concurrent physical therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy.
