Abstract

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. In the management of lung cancer, mediastinal lymph node staging is critical to determine the potential for curative treatment in the absence of distant metastases. Different modalities of noninvasive as well as invasive mediastinal staging should be used to accurately stage the mediastinum. PET-CT has an important role; however invasive staging with mediastinoscopy or endoscopic fine needle aspiration should be utilized for tissue confirmation. Restaging a patient posttreatment poses specific additional challenges, however careful planning up front can simplify the overall staging and restaging process to optimize diagnostic accuracy and safety.
