Abstract Dynamic modeling describes the quantitative representation of time‐dependent systems, usually as systems of differential equations or discrete versions thereof. Dynamic models may be nonlinear, high dimensional, spatially explicit, and can exhibit complex behavior. They are most commonly deterministic, but can be stochastic. They are key elements for many scientific disciplines, and the foundation for environmental prediction. Dynamic modeling in environmetrics considers uncertainty analysis, as well as inference on the state of the system and its parameters using available observations.
