Le féminin joue dans l’œuvre de Lévinas un rôle crucial, puisque, rencontré d’abord dans la relation érotique, il brise le cercle du même et l’ouvre à la dimension salutaire de la transcendance. Cependant, si certain-es ont estimé que par là Lévinas rompait avec le phallogocentrisme, dans une veine beauvoirienne Stella Sandford montre à quel point il demeure masculiniste. Sans témoigner d’aucune distance critique, Lévinas associe le féminin à l’ambiguïté de l’éros, à la différence sexuelle et le pose comme l’autre à la fois « inviolable » et quasi animal, irresponsable ou enfantin d’un sujet qui ne se pense jamais qu’au masculin. La critique de Beauvoir était donc pertinente et le Derrida de « Violence et métaphysique » aurait mieux fait de se demander quel homme tenait la plume de Lévinas lorsqu’il écrivait, plutôt que se réjouir de ce qu’il écrivît en tant qu’homme.
