La cité ouvrière Michelin, située dans le quartier de La Plaine au nord du centre clermontois, est l’objet depuis plus de vingt ans de mutations sociospatiales sans doute similaires à celles que subissent d’autres anciens quartiers ouvriers. Cependant, ce processus traduit des conditions, des temporalités, des acteurs et des effets différents selon les quartiers et leur contexte. Il semble important d’identifier les paramètres spécifiques de la recomposition sociospatiale de la cité ouvrière Michelin, qui ne peuvent être généralisables qu’aux quartiers réunissant les mêmes conditions. L'intérêt de ce travail réside dans l’accent mis sur le rapport dialectique entre les transformations spatiales et sociales du territoire analysé. Dans cette optique, la réflexion met en évidence la simultanéité de plusieurs dynamiques où les transformations physiques du quartier et les changements sociaux s’alimentent mutuellement et marquent le passage d’une identité ouvrière forte à une diversité des identités et des trajectoires. La première conjugue tant les effets des actions urbaines menées par la municipalité et par Michelin, que ceux liés à la proximité du centre et au type d’habitat. La deuxième renvoie à l’autoréhabilitation initiée par les ménages ouvriers qui ont procédé à leur ascension sociale et par les nouveaux arrivants de catégories intermédiaires. Enfin, la troisième rend compte de la nouvelle construction sociale du quartier.
