Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide as the majority of patients have advanced disease at diagnosis. Detection and early treatment of preneoplastic lesions may prevent progression to invasive carcinoma and improve outcome. Recent advances in optical imaging, computerized tomography, and image-guided navigation biopsy devices provide unprecedented opportunity to localize preneoplastic lesions in the lung to better understand their natural history and enables minimally invasive endobronchial treatment without removing adjacent normal lung tissue.
