On oppose souvent histoire littéraire et étude de la littérature contemporaine. Opposition fallacieuse, comme le démontre cette intervention en examinant la constitution de la littérature contemporaine en objet de recherche, la mobilisation de l’histoire littéraire que cela suppose et le regard rétrospectif que la littérature contemporaine projette sur l’histoire littéraire dont elle hérite. Il faut pour cela faire justice des réserves et objections que l’étude du contemporain suscite encore dans les universités traditionalistes, historiennes par vocation ; déterminer, au sein de la production contemporaine, les corpus pertinents pour une telle recherche, les critères qui les distinguent, et périodiser ce corpus. Fondée sur l’observation des esthétiques et enjeux nouveaux que la littérature actuelle se donne à elle-même, la seule approche recevable ne peut être qu’historique et non théorique. Le recours à l’histoire littéraire est en effet nécessaire pour identifier le « tournant » où cette littérature prend naissance. Il est décisif pour décrire les formes qui apparaissent en les confrontant aux formes anciennement attestées. Plus encore : les écrivains contemporains se définissent aussi par le regard qu’ils portent sur l’histoire littéraire, par leur manière de la raconter autrement. Prendre conscience de ce « régime d’historicité » de la littérature contemporaine suppose d’analyser non seulement les oeuvres, mais aussi ce que ces oeuvres disent de la place que les écrivains s’accordent dans l’histoire littéraire qui les a nourris.
