Les classes moyennes sont-elles en déclin au sein de la société québécoise ? Quatre indicateurs caractérisant le statut socioéconomique des ménages sont examinés afin de répondre à cette question. La thèse du déclin n’est pas confirmée pour la période 1982-2008, bien que les classes moyennes aient eu plus de difficulté à maintenir leur rang à partir des seuls revenus de marché. Les chances d’accès aux classes moyennes, associées à différentes caractéristiques comme l’âge, la scolarité ou la présence d’enfants, sont restées bonnes mais la composition de ces dernières a profondément changé au fil des ans. On y retrouve moins de jeunes ménages, moins de ménages avec enfant présent, plus de retraités et davantage de personnes plus scolarisées. La mutation des classes moyennes reflètent donc les changements structuraux qui ont marqué le Québec dans le dernier tiers du XXe siècle.
