Abstract
Longtemps, la fatigue au travail a été associée à l’usure du corps qui, inexorablement, conduisait à la perte des forces et à la mort. Toutefois, très tôt dans l’histoire humaine, certaines catégories de personnes ont eu à faire des activités qui, sans nécessiter de fortes dépenses physiques, supposaient un engagement et un contrôle de soi sans précédents. C’est dans ce contexte que sont apparues de nouvelles catégories pathologiques - de l’acédie des moines à l’actuel syndrome de fatigue chronique - permettant de donner un sens socialement reconnu à la nouvelle forme de fatigue que ressentaient ceux qui avaient des difficultés à se plier à ces exigences, tout en véhiculant des discours souvent normalisateurs. Si ces différentes entités nosologiques partagent un certain nombre de points communs (tentative pour mettre en forme une fatigue pathologique, absence de base organique démontrée, complicité avec les normes sociales dominantes chez les malades, etc.), leur nature était également très dépendante du contexte dans lequel elles se sont développées, ce qui autorise une approche de construction sociale.
