Abstract
This chapter introduces fundamental aspects of wireless channel propagation. It begins with propagation loss and its dependence on distance and frequency, followed by attenuation effects due to foliage. Indoor propagation models are outlined to describe signal behavior in enclosed environments. General channel models are then introduced, together with fading models and Doppler effects arising from motion. The wide-sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (WSSUS) framework is presented as a basis for statistical characterization. Propagation mechanisms such as reflection, diffraction, and scattering are described, along with atmospheric influences. The chapter concludes with channel models tailored for 5G and 6G systems and a discussion of near-field channels.
