Abstract

Cet article se base sur une étude ethnographique réalisée dans un hôpital du Bangladesh. Il existe très peu d’exemples d’ethnographies réalisées en contexte médical dans des pays non occidentaux, et aucun au Bangladesh. Cette recherche a démontré que, contrairement à l’universalisme supposé de la biomédecine, la pratique biomédicale est en fait le produit de conditions sociales particulières, et que l’hôpital dans laquelle elle se déroule reflète les caractéristiques de la société à laquelle il appartient. L’étude a mis en évidence qu’un hôpital du Bangladesh constitue un microcosme de ce pays, et illustre les dimensions humaines de la pratique médicale dans ce pays pauvre où la violence physique et structurelle est quotidienne. J’avance que, loin d’être une île coupée du reste de la société, l’hôpital devrait être considéré comme la capitale du continent.
