Abstract
RÉSUMÉ Depuis que les registres de la Pénitencerie apostolique ont été mis à la disposition d’un certain nombre de chercheurs en 1983, un nombre considérable de travaux ont été écrits sur le sujet, en particulier des répertoires comportant des documents originaux relatifs à la Norvège, à la Pologne et à l’Empire. La France, en revanche, n’a pas fait l’objet d’études majeures. Après avoir retracé la bibliographie du sujet, cet article fournit une brève introduction au fonctionnement de l’office pontifical depuis son origine vers 1200 jusqu’à son abandon sous sa forme médiévale lors de la réforme de 1569. Les deux dernières parties traitent de cas d’espèce relatifs à la violence. Ils étudient l’absolution des péchés, les dispenses pour empêchements sacramentels et, plus généralement, ce qu’on appelle les lettres déclaratoires dont le contenu invite à une comparaison avec les lettres de pardon en Angleterre et les lettres de rémission en France.
