Abstract
Le procès permanent qui s'instaure entre catholicisme et modernité trouve d'excellents aliments dans des traits de la société moderne, directement opposés aux conceptions et à la symbolique catholiques. Les tendances autoritaires actuelles dans l'Église redonnent quelque actualité aux thèses du traditionalisme à la Joseph de Maistre qu'on avait cru balayées par le concile Vatican II. Mais à cette compréhension unilatérale des choses, on peut opposer une autre lecture où il apparaît que le catholicisme porte en lui bien des germes qui ont donné naissance à la modernité et qui continuent à la stimuler. En toute hypothèse, la relation entre catholicisme et modernité ne peut pas être simple, car elle est faite d'une tension vivante et toujours renouvelée selon les évolutions historiques. On peut cependant souhaiter que les faux procès laissent la place aux véritables débats.
