Abstract

The history, principles and benefits (safety, efficiency, economy and environment) of intelligent transport systems (ITS) are outlined. The different types of ITS for road/infrastructure and vehicles are described: traffic management systems, traveller information systems, intersection traffic management systems, pedestrian protection systems, vision enhancement systems, collision avoidance systems, automated collision notification systems, driver status and performance monitoring systems, driver information systems, intelligent speed control systems, and commercial vehicle-related technologies. Definitions of ITS in Australia, Canada, Europe, Japan and the USA are presented and the development and use of ITS in Japan, Australia, Europe and the USA are reviewed. The road transportation system in India, statistics for road accidents in India, the need to reduce vehicle pollution and the benefits that would be obtained by deploying ITS in India are discussed.
