Depuis les travaux pionniers de Beaver, Ball et Brown en 1968, une abondante littérature s’est développée autour de la problématique du contenu informatif des nombres comptables. Les scandales financiers survenus au début de ce siècle ont eu comme portée, le renouvellement de ce débat. Dans la plupart des cas, la perspective d’analyse retenue par différents travaux empiriques a été celle des entreprises managériales cotées. Dans la mesure où cette perspective d’analyse ne permet pas de saisir l’influence directe des acteurs sur la qualité des chiffres publiés, cet article propose une extension de la problématique des nombres comptables en contexte PME, la question principale étant de savoir si le profil éthique du propriétaire-dirigeant influence le contenu informatif de ces nombres. L’étude empirique porte sur les données comptables d’un échantillon de 93 PME candidates au financement bancaire. Le principal résultat mis en évidence est que les PME rationnées sur le marché du crédit bancaire sont paradoxalement celles dont la valeur comptable des actifs nets est relativement plus élevée. L’analyse permet d’établir que le profil éthique des propriétaires-dirigeants justifie ce résultat.
