Abstract
Pierre Bédard (1762-1829) est un personnage méconnu de l’histoire du Québec. Premier leader d’une majorité parlementaire à la Chambre d’assemblée du Bas-Canada, il fonde en 1806 un journal politique, Le Canadien, pour répondre aux attaques des marchands anglais publiées dans le Quebec Mercury. Cette oligarchie marchande s’allie au gouvernement colonial pour neutraliser l’opposition, dirigée par Bédard, et les revendications qu’elle exprime au sein de l’Assemblée. en 1810, à l’issue d’une crise parlementaire, le gouverneur James Craig décrète des élections générales, fait saisir Le Canadien et emprisonne Pierre Bédard et plusieurs députés. Malgré ce coup de force, la population réélit les mêmes représentants. Bédard passe treize mois en prison, en réclamant un procès qu’il n’obtiendra jamais. il résiste seul aux volontés du pouvoir qui souhaite le contraindre à un aveu de sédition et de rébellion. Défendant courageusement le droit, la justice et la liberté d’expression, Bédard demeure un exemple de résistance à l’arbitraire et à l’oppression.
