Une très grande majorité de danseuses et de danseurs doivent composer avec des problèmes de santé affligeant le déroulement de leurs activités professionnelles au point de mettre prématurément un terme à leur carrière. Si la médecine de la danse contribue grandement aux connaissances sur la fonctionnalité des corps des danseurs, cet article porte plutôt sur les enjeux socioculturels propres au milieu de la danse contemporaine et susceptibles d’influencer les discours et pratiques de santé en danse. Notre étude met ainsi en lumière les demandes contradictoires faites quotidiennement aux interprètes, ces derniers devant concilier les exigences d’un corps en santé, fonctionnel et équilibré à celles d’un corps poétique, capable d’abandon et d’invention, le tout, sans l’existence d’un filet de sûreté adéquat en matière de conditions de travail.
