Abstract
Des projections démographiques selon le groupe autochtone ont été réalisées avec l'ajout de certains éléments nouveaux comme les effectifs non énumérés au recensement de 1986 ainsi que la prise en compte des Indiens qui ont recouvré leur statut suite à l'application du projet de loi C-31 (entre 1985 et 1990, les recouvrements de statut font augmenter l'effectif des Indiens avec statut d'environ 25 %). Les populations autochtones continueront de croître à un rythme supérieur à celui de la population canadienne. La comparaison de cette sous-population à la population canadienne révèle une convergence de certaines caractéristiques démographiques; les populations autochtones s'engagent toutefois plus tardivement dans le processus de vieillissement.
