Abstract
L’évolution du citoyen au consommateur s’est faite progressivement. Les anciens Grecs estimaient que l’homme est d’abord un « animal politique ». Mais il fut asservi par les empires et les royautés et il fallut attendre la Renaissance et surtout le siècle des Lumières pour qu’il devienne un citoyen. Le capitalisme, qui s’instaura en même temps que la démocratie, le transforma en producteur puis en consommateur. L’article relate cette histoire et explique les conséquences qu’elle comporte : sur le plan du temps, du corps, de la pensée et de l’amour. Assiste-t-on à une nouvelle économie psychique de l’individu ou ce dernier a-t-il encore la force de résister à cette transformation?
